The lake and the park

Lake Plumbuita is part of the Colentina lake chain, in Sector 2. Lake Tei lies upstream and Lake Colentina downstream. Plumbuita Monastery (Mănăstirea Plumbuita) stands on the shore, and the park was developed around it. The lake has an island, which is part of the park projects.

The park covers 205,568 square meters, according to Spotmedia. It includes two historic monument complexes: Plumbuita Monastery and the Ghica-Tei Palace (Palatul Ghica-Tei).

A park smaller than it used to be

The park was developed as a recreation area in 1977, according to Economica.net. At that time it covered 80 hectares, with paved paths, playgrounds and resting areas. Its area shrank considerably as a result of land restitutions.

A plot of almost four hectares in the middle of the park, between Strada Plumbuita and the monastery, was returned to its former owners in 2008. Sector 2 City Hall bought it back for €4.3 million, and the land became public property in February 2024, according to G4Media.

The redevelopment project

In February–March 2024, Sector 2 City Hall signed three contracts, for Plumbuita Park I, Plumbuita Park II and the island. The total value is 55,393,572 lei, according to Spotmedia.

According to G4Media, the plan includes replanting vegetation with an irrigation system, bike paths, new playgrounds, gazebos, a running track, sports fields and a skate park. The island would become a sports-themed area.

Where the project stands

In July 2026, Spotmedia reported that work had not started, more than two years after the contracts were signed. Construction requires a permit from the Bucharest City Hall, which asked several times for the documentation to be completed in 2024 and 2025. Sector 2 City Hall says it has not given up on the project. The only interventions observed until then were the trees planted last autumn.
